How to use LeafDNS

LeafDNS is a commonly used tool to display the current records that a domain name is using. The main records that the site will display are Nameservers, mx and www. For more detailed information on what these records are used for click this link.

When you visit the site it will ask you to enter a domain to run a test to display the dns records. It will also show you the previous run test  and even allows you to view those result by clicking on the number link on the left of the domain.  This set of number can be considered as ID number for the specific test you have run at that time.

When you enter a domain and click "Go!' the first thing it displays is the time stamp of the test and other options.

  • Redo This Test: This will run the same test under the same test id number.
  • Lock This Test: By clicking this option it will lock the test results even if someone clicks the redo this test option.
  • Delete This Test: This will completely erase the test results from the database.
  • Start a New Test: You will return back to the home page.

The first set of dns records that the test results will display are the Nameservers and the server IP address. It will display them as the Parent NS and Local NS, it most case these will match with each other. The most common reason why they would be different is that they are in the process of being updated.

The next set of records that are important are the MX records. This records will help you find out which email server are receiving your incoming emails. This is a key record to look for when you are having issues when receiving email.

The final records to take note of are the WWW. This will display the the A and cname records that will help you in knowing from which server your live site is pulling the content from. For example you have your nameservers pointed to the domain registrar but you have set up a the A records to connect to clickcunnels. This would mean that your site content is located in clickfunnels since the A records is connecting the domain to it through A record.
